Tulio Acquistapace CAPT SC USN Ret


The last bugle call for Captain Tulio Acquistapace, USN Retired, rang for our long-time chapter member and dear friend May 28th . Acquistapace is a California native. He received his Naval Reserve commission through the Naval ROTC program at UC Berkeley in l957. His active duty service was as Supply and Disbursing Officer on the USS JARVIS, DD 799. After active duty he continued his Navy career as a Ready Reservist, drilling at reserve centers at Chavez Ravine- Los Angeles, Alameda, Treasure Island, and San Bruno . After serving as Commanding Officer of four reserve units he retired in September 1983.

In civilian life he worked for Transamerica Corporation in Financial Services and retired after 39 years.

In retirement he has remained active and member of a number of military organizations: Naval Order of the US as Vice Commander of Membership; Navy League; United States Navy Memorial Foundation; MOAA; Marines’ Memorial Club; Supply Corps Association, and Elks Lodge.

His favorite pastime was fishing, gardening and traveling with his wife, Rosemarie. He is survived by his son Steve Acquistapace, wife Diane, children Dante, Carina and Anthony Belluomini; daughter Janet Mudd, husband Byron and children Kylie and Garret. Daughter Joan and son Michael predeceased both Tulio and Rose.

Fred Jaffin, Alameda MOAA President : Our board member, our friend, Tulio Aquistapace, Captain, USN, Ret., passed away last month, along with his wife, Rose. Both were personal friends of mine, and their families’ loss is also ours. He was a great leader and personal advisor to me, along with being a friend. What else could anyone ask for in life? He will be interned at the VA cemetery at Dixon CA next week at 1100. I hope that you can join us for Tulio and Rose's burial service.

Warren McDonald, Alameda MOAA Chapter Treasurer: I first met Tulio over 60 years ago. I pledged the fraternity at U C Berkeley where Tulio was a senior. He was involved in the Navy ROTC. I depledged because I couldn’t take the military-like regimentation of fraternity life. Tulio graduated about  the same time I flunked out of school because I hadn’t learned how to study. Because we had a draft in those days, I enlisted in the Coast Guard.

Our paths didn’t cross again for over fifty years. I had changed my ways, retired from the Coast Guard Reserve as a captain, and had spent six years on the Board of MOAA National. After incorporating the Alameda MOAA Chapter, I attended the commissioning of a new Coast Guard ship. Tulio sat behind me in the spectators’ seats. His was a name difficult to forget. When I heard his friend mention his name, I turned around and re-introduced myself after five decades. We discussed MOAA, and I invited him to join our new Chapter. The rest is history. Tulio contributed mightily to our Chapter, serving as President, and providing the leadership that has helped to make our Chapter Strong.
