William Ball

Chief, Voluntary & Hospitality Services, VA Palo Alto Health System

Mr. Ball currently serves as Chief, Voluntary & Hospitality Services at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and is also VISN 21 Voluntary Service Liaison to Central Officer in Washington D.C.  As VISN Liaison he provides administrative support to seven facilities in the network.  Mr. Ball has served as a Preceptor for several Technical Career Field (TCF) Interns and is a member of the VA Voluntary Service Central Office Field Resource Review Team.  As Chief, Voluntary & Hospitality Services he manages one of the largest Voluntary Service Programs in the Veterans Health Administration.  The volunteer program at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System serves three inpatient divisions and seven outpatient clinics.  During Fiscal Year 2020, 1,350 volunteers contributed approximately 160,000 hours of service.  Monetary and in-kind donations to the volunteer program exceeded $11 million dollars.  Mr. Ball also oversees Hospitality services which consist of a 2 Fisher Houses consisting of 41 rooms and a 104 bed Defenders Lodge.  Both programs provide temporary lodging for Veterans and their Caregivers.

Mr. Ball has 35 years of Federal Service starting as a Recreation Therapist at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center in 1985; in 1989 he enrolled and was accepted in the Chief, Voluntary Service Training Program at the Pittsburgh VA; following his training he held the position of Chief, Voluntary Service and Public Affairs Officer at the Grand Island VA Medical Center in Nebraska, Los Angeles Outpatient Clinic in Downtown Los Angeles and the Sepulveda VA Medical Center in San Fernando Valley, California.  In 1997, he transferred to the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and serves as Chief, Voluntary & Hospitality Services.

Zoom Meeting

For those unfamiliar with Zoom Technology, it is simple to use - whether you want to just sign up for your own Zoom account (free) or you have been invited to a Zoom meeting.   

Before joining a Zoom meeting on a computer or mobile device, you can download the Zoom app from Zoom’s Download Center.  Otherwise, you will be prompted to download and install Zoom when you click a meeting link.

You can also join a test meeting  to familiarize yourself with Zoom.  A couple of points to call out:

Each meeting has a unique 9, 10, or 11-digit number called a meeting ID that will be required to join a Zoom meeting


If you are joining via telephone, you will need the teleconferencing number provided in the invite.

You have option of audio or audio + video.  If opting to share your video, select the Video icon to turn on. You can also join using your computer’s audio without video.

Creating your own account

To sign up for your own free account, visit zoom.us/signup and enter your email address. You will receive an email from Zoom (no-reply@zoom.us). In this email, click Activate Account.

Signing into your Zoom account on the web

You can login to your Zoom account on the web at any time, at zoom.us/signin.  Once you're logged in, use the panel on the left side to navigate the Zoom web portal.  You can update your profile, schedule a meeting, edit your settings, and more.
